At first it was being reported that children did not seem to be catching the COVID-19 virus and if they did, their symptoms were from mild to almost unnoticeable. Now that information seems to be changing.
A 5-year-old died Thursday from a rare syndrome that has been linked to COVID-19. It is the first death in New York that is believed to be related to a new syndrome that has been appearing recently.
Governor Cuomo reported that 73 children have been afflicted with this illness that doctors call “pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome” The state Health Department has gone back to restudy other recent children’s deaths to try and determine if they too were a result of this syndrome.
“This would be really painful news and would open up an entirely different chapter,” Mr. Cuomo said. “Because I can’t tell you how many people I spoke to who took peace and solace in the fact that children were not getting infected.”
As the total number of New York deaths passed the 21,000 mark, it was reported that three children younger than 10-years-old have died from the virus. Reports last Monday stated that 15 children between the ages of 2 and 15 were hospitalized with this COVID-related syndrome. Symptoms can include a high temperature lasting over five days along with a rash, swollen neck glands, dry cracked lips, swelling of the hands and feet, and redness in both eyes.
It has been reported that 66% of new hospital admissions related to COVID-19 were people who have obeyed the stay at home order.
