CAL FIRE Warns California Residents to Prepare for “difficult Wildfire Season

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), at last week’s Wildfire Preparedness Week, warned California residents that the upcoming wildfire season could be more dangerous due to the lack of late season rain and snow.

They have already responded to fires in the state but has yet to see one of significant size. CAL FIRE Director Chief Tom Porter said that now is the time for residents to develop preparedness and evacuation plans. He said that there was no reason to believe that a major wildfire will not occur again this year.

Five of the deadliest fires in California history have occurred in the last three years. 145 people lost their lives in those fires. CAL FIRE already has crews working to remove possible fire fuels in hopes of heading off major wildfires.

• Create a 100-foot safety zone around your home by clearing any brush and debris. This makes your home safer for your family and if a wildfire happens, it helps with the safety of the fire crews that have to battle the blaze.

• Harden your home by using fire-resistant building materials like composite roof materials and closed eaves.

• Pack an emergency supply kit now in case you are forced to evacuate quickly.

• Design an emergency evacuation plan for your family, how to get away, what routes to drive (you need more than one set of roads to use), who to contact, where to meet, etc.

• Decide ahead of time what you need to take with you so that there is no rush to gather things if the need to evacuate comes about.

• Keep updated about any fires that may be threatening your area. If a wildfire threatens, don’t wait to be contacted by authorities, evacuate while it is still safe to do so.
