The steeple caught on fire at the Urban Bible Fellowship Church, built on E. Eager
Street in Baltimore sometime between 1865 and 1867, right after the Civil War.
Firefighters were able to contain the 4-alarm fire to the church even though there
were several buildings in close proximity. Due to the extensive damage, the steeple
did eventually fall to the ground and into a small alley that runs between the church
and the Institute of Notre Dame, an all-girls Catholic High School, on the opposite
side of the alley.
To battle the blaze, the firefighters needed to run their hoses through the building
and then out of the upper windows of the Notre Dame high school. It wasn’t until
after the blaze was under control, that school staff was allowed to enter the school
building to inspect it for any damage.
Although the fire never was allowed to reach the school building, there was damage
that was related to the fire and fighting the fire. Several windows at the school were
broken out as a result of the fire’s intense heat. Also ceilings in one school’s wings
had collapsed from water cascading back onto the building.
As you can see, damage from a fire, and the water used to fight the fire, does not
necessarily have to happen in your house for your home to be affected. Many times
homes and buildings that are close to a building that is on fire can sustain an
extensive amount of costly damage. If you have homeowner’s insurance, this
damage will be covered.
The only reason the Institute of Notre Dame High School escaped losing classroom
time was because Baltimore schools were all closed due to the Coronavirus
pandemic. If your home was next door to this church, your home life would have
suffered even though your house was not involved in the fire other than being next
door. Where could you go and to whom could you turn to for help during times of a
“shelter-in-place” pandemic?
