Bedroom Water Damage and Mold Removal

Water damage in any room of your home is a bad thing, but water damage in your bedroom can be particularly devastating. If you think about it, you spend more time out of every day in your bedroom. If a water damage turns into a mold problem, your health could be more affected because of the time you spend in that one room. Also your bedroom probably contains more of your irreplaceable personal items than almost any other room in your house. Think about clothes, pictures, important documents, and family mementos that you keep in the bedroom.

In what ways can Water Damage my Bedroom?

If a water leak affects a bedroom it can cause damage to many different things. It can saturate carpet or area rugs. It can flow into the closet and damage shoes, clothing, or other items you have stored there. It can damage bedroom furniture. Solid wood furniture can swell as moisture is absorbed and split or warp. Furniture constructed of engineered wood, which many pieces of furniture are made of these days, can swell and break apart and even after drying be permanently damaged.

Water damage can easily be missed if it occurs under a bed or a chest of drawers. When it is finally discovered it may be too late to save anything that has become affected.

What makes my Bedroom so susceptible to Mold Contamination?

Bedrooms are generally smaller rooms that are full of furniture and personal items. Think about it, bedrooms have a bed, a dresser and maybe a chest of drawers, one or two nightstands, possibly a chair, and whatever personal items that seem to collect there while not being used. All these things, crowded into a small space, limits air circulation. Even with the lights on, it remains dark behind furniture and under the bed. Water damage may be difficult to find in a timely manner.

Mold only needs near darkness, lack of air movement, organic materials like many fabrics and linens, and water. And it can begin to grow in 24-48 hours or less.

What makes Bedroom Mold so dangerous?

Bedroom mold is perhaps more dangerous than mold in other rooms due to the amount of time you are exposed to it by being in your bedroom. Although some health effects may take affect quickly, many times sensitivities build up over time.

You may get a skin rash or your eyes may become irritated almost immediately. You may develop a runny nose or a cough. Sometimes you may think that you have caught a cold but the problems are actually mold related. But the CDC says that the real mold dangers could be respiratory problems and asthma, symptoms that take time to develop and become severe, life-long health problems.

How should I Remove Bedroom Mold?

You are correct in thinking about removal. You should never consider killing mold or covering over it with paint or a sealer. Even dead mold can affect your health. Many times you may think that the mold is gone, but it is only laying dormant, waiting for the next time water is introduced.

Mold removal should be left to professionals like Water Mold Fire Restoration. Unless mold is removed completely, including the mold spores, and then the affected area(s) treated and dried, your health could be endangered and the mold could return.

Also, proper containment must be achieved to keep the mold from being inadvertently spread to previously unaffected areas of your home. Why remove it from your bedroom only to spread it to the living room or other bedrooms because of lack of knowledge or training. Each mold technician at Water Mold Fire Restoration is nationally certified in mold remediation by the IICRC. They have both the skills and the equipment necessary to remediate your mold problem. How can I prevent Bedroom Mold?

The absolute best way to prevent mold growth is to control moisture:

  • Check for possible leaks in supply lines or faucets on a regular basis.

  • Never leave piles of wet and/or damp clothing or towels in the bedroom.

  • Wipe up or blot up any spills quickly and dry the area with a fan.

  • Control humidity levels and keep them below 50%.

  • Keep furniture slightly away from walls to assist air movement.

  • Be aware of any condensation issues on windows.

  • If you use a humidifier in the bedroom, don’t leave it on if you are not going to be in the room.

  • Any humidifiers or dehumidifiers that you use should be cleaned on a regular basis.

  • Never store cardboard boxes or paper on the floor of your closets or under your bed.
