UV light, in particular short UV wavelengths, will kill many different germs including SARS and many different types of corona viruses and molds. This is why hospitals and water treatment plants utilize UV light to kill mold, viruses, and bacteria. This is why UV light-emitting machines are being used in some places to attempt to kill the COVID-19 viruses. You can purchase one of these lamps designed for at home use from several national retailers.
But do they really perform like you hope?
Ultraviolet-C light (UVC) has been proven to kill the corona virus and many molds in controlled laboratory settings using specified doses. However, manufacturers of the consumer versions of these lamps are careful not to state which germs or molds their lamps will eliminate. If you read the manuals that come with the lamp, there is no mention of being able to kill corona viruses or mold spores in the air or on surfaces.
These consumer lamps are nowhere near as powerful as those used in laboratories. If any obstruction exists, or even small amounts of dust are present, the rays simply won’t do the job you were hoping for. And there is the added danger that UV light can damage your eyes or your health. In addition to emitting UV rays, these lamps also produce ozone, which in concentrated levels can be deadly. When using UV light in a room in your house, you, members of your family, and even your pets should vacate the room and the room should be aired out before it is reoccupied. A UV light should never be used as a substitute for other protective practices or safety procedures.
