These nationwide “Stay at Home” and “Shelter in Place” orders are finally starting to be lifted, but not soon enough for most people. And Louisville residents anxious to get back to normal will echo those thoughts.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has decided to reopen Kentucky’s economy on May 20th, with some businesses being held back until June 1st. Indiana Governor Eric Holcome decided to open Indiana’s economy on May 4th. Even though most Indiana establishments will be operating at only 50% capacity, the rush is on.
Indiana business owners and managers are rushing to get the establishments ready. They are installing Plexiglas shields, gathering masks for employees and placing X’s on floors to mark distancing requirements. Employees are being contacted about returning to work.
Meanwhile, Louisville residents suffering from cabin fever are rushing for the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge. Governor Beshear says, “Let's not drive to other states just because they're doing something earlier…”
Indiana has entered their “Stage 2” plan, opening malls and retail stores at 50% capacity and indoor common areas at 25%. Industrial operations opened and are required to follow OSHA and CDC guidelines. The state also lifted travel restrictions and is allowing groups of up to 25 people to gather.
What that means for Louisville residents is that shopping is available just across the river, a virtual stone’s throw away. And a shopping they are going!
Jeffersonville, Indiana Mayor Mike Moore says, “I would welcome anybody that wants to come over from Louisville, we’ve got that walking bridge open for a reason. We look at Kentucky as our good neighbors, friends and potential customers. If they’d like to come over to Indiana, we’d love to have them.”
