Although decorating your home with candles can create a warm and cozy atmosphere in your home, Water Mold Fire Restoration wants you to be aware of candle’s dangers and candle myths. While a home lit with candles looks extremely beautiful and candles deliver a wonderful fragrance, they can be dangerous also. Between the years 2009 and 2013, National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) reported the occurrence of approximately 9,300 fires in homes that were started by candles. These fires resulted in over 86 deaths, more than 800 injuries, and property damage to the tune of $375 million.

It is extremely important to understand the dangers of candles and how to avoid them. Here are some tips to avoid a candle-related fire disaster:

  • Make sure that you are always in sight of a burning candle. You should never leave your home or the room a candle is in. Before you go to bed, blow out any burning candles. Check that the candles are completely out and the wick is not glowing and is completely black.
  • Do not place the candles near items such as books, paper, furniture, curtains,or other flammable items.
  • Ensure that you keep the candles out of reach from children and pets.
  • Longercandlewicks may burn unevenly and become hazardous. So, cut the wick of the candles to around ¼ of an inch before you light the candle.
  • Use a large candleholder that is heat resistant that is made specifically for candles and that can contain the melted candle wax.

Candle Myths

Even when used properly candles, can easily ignite a fire. There are many myths related to candle use. Here is the truth behind some of the most common misconceptions about burning candles that can help keep your home and your family safe:

Myth 1: Keeping Candles on Countertops Is Safe - placing a candle on any surface, even if it is flat and away from the ground does not make it fireproof or safe. The candle can be still knocked over accidentally and objects around it can easily catch fire due to the open flame. Curtains, fabrics and other flammable materials can be pushed or blown into the candle flame by wind gusts. Or the candle can fall over. No matter where you place lit candles, you need to be vigilant.

Myth 2: Tea Candles, Wickless Candles and Wax Melts Are Completely Safe - this is completely untrue. All types of candles require a flame to burn and release pleasing aromas. Tea candles are extremely popular and are used widely for mood lighting; however, there is an open flame and a chance of a fire. You should always use caution when burning tea lights, wickless candles or wax melts.

Myth 3: Candles Are the Best Option When Power Fails–you should always use flashlights and battery-powered lanterns instead of using candles whenever there is a power outage. If these items are unavailable and you must use candles, do not carry them around. Place them in safe areas and never leave them in attics, closets, etc., and never place them close to windows, linens, curtains, etc. Most importantly, always remember to extinguish all the candles before leaving an area or going to sleep.
