Closet Mold Removal

Mold can cause serious health problems for many people; this is especially true for seniors and younger children. Because closet doors usually remain closed and shut off from the rest of your home, closets can be an area in your home susceptible to mold growth.

Why does my Closet have Mold in it?

Mold will grow in areas with moisture, a lack of air movement, and an absence of light. Your closet easily provides two of the three requirements, darkness and little to no air movement. If moisture is added, maybe from a slow water leak in one of the walls, or wet clothing, coats, or shoes, conditions for mold growth will have been met.

Mold comes into your home in many ways and a home is never really mold-free. Mold spores can be carried in on shoes and clothing or just float in on the wind when you leave windows or doors open to get a fresh breeze. Mold spores are tiny and can’t be see without a microscope. They range in size from 3-40 microns. For comparison, the average human hair is around 80 microns. So a mold spore is usually less than half the size as a human hair.

What do I do if I find Closet Mold?

The severity of the mold problem will determine what you should do. First, remove any items of clothing and have them washed, or dry cleaned if necessary, to remove any mold spores that may be clinging to them. Pay close attention to leather goods, like shoes or purses and belts. These items need to be cleaned and dried also. Mold will grow on and stain leather. If your closet has cardboard boxes or papers in them, these too should be removed and closely examined for mold contamination. If any mold is found on them, discard these items, as they can’t be cleaned in a cost effective manner

Any mold found on flooring or walls needs to be removed. Not wiped down with bleach or covered over with a paint-like sealer, removed. This may mean cutting out walls or baseboards to further inspect the inside of wall cavities.

Is Closet Mold dangerous?

Mold can be dangerous if you or anyone residing in your home is sensitive to it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mold can cause many negative health effects when people are exposed to it; a stuffy nose, sore throat, skin rashes, and asthma. During any attempt to remove mold, the mold spores can easily become airborne and unintentionally be spread to other areas of your home.

How can I Prevent Closet Mold?

The following things may help you to avoid having mold grow in your closets:

  • Be sure that all clothes and linens are completely dry before placing them in your closet.

  • Don’t cram clothing in the closet; leave some space around items to help air circulate.

  • Replace you solid wooden or metal shelving with wire shelving systems.

  • Leave closet doors open on occasion or replace solid doors with louvered ones.

  • Keep things up off of the closet floor. Using shoe racks will keep damp shoes off the floor and will provide an organized look.

  • Place a moisture absorbing crystal product in the closet to help eliminate humidity and moisture.
