Whenever you find mold in your crawlspace, it doesn’t really mater what type of mold it is. Whether you own a conventionally constructed home, a manufactured home, or mobile home, if you discover mold in the crawlspace, it needs to be removed, not just “killed” or covered over by mold or stain blockers. Many people think that they are mold removal experts, and that by merely wiping away or sealing the visible mold with a sealant or paint that they have solved their mold problem. They are wrong! Mold, and many of the materials affected by mold, need to be systematically removed, bagged, and properly disposed of. Then any moisture-laden materials that remain must be dried to acceptable moisture content levels to prevent the mold from returning.

Why is there Mold in my Crawlspace?

Moisture is the problem. The first step in solving any mold problem needs to be the elimination of any water source or leak, whether it is caused by humidity, pipe leaks, or by the presence of standing water. If you don’t remove or stop the water, you can’t stop the mold! Your crawlspace is never completely mold free because mold is found everywhere. It is only when the concentrations of mold are greater than what is “natural” in your particular environment that mold becomes an issue. So you need to locate the mold’s source of water and eliminate it.

What health issues can Crawlspace Mold Cause?

Keep these symptoms in mind. It could be something other than a common cold that may be affecting you or a family member:

  1. Skin Rash – you don’t have to come into direct contact with mold to develop a skin rash; just breathing in mold spores and fumes can result in a rash.

  2. Irritation to Eyes – mold can cause eyes to water and become red. You may think the cause is seasonal allergies when a mold issue is the culprit.

  3. Listlessness – a feeling of being overly tired day after day even if you seem to be getting an adequate amount of sleep.

  4. Headaches – breathing in mold can result in headaches to people with sensitivities to mold and mold spores.

  5. Sore Throat – difficulty swallowing or hoarseness when talking can indicate you have been exposed to mold; sensitive membranes can become irritated by mold spores.

  6. Runny Nose or Stuffy Sinuses – you may think you are catching a cold but this symptom can also be a result of mold exposure.

How should Crawlspace Mold be removed?

It can’t be stressed often enough that mold needs to be removed, not just wiped away, killed, and/or covered over. It’s not a job for individuals that are not knowledgeable about the required methods of safe and proper mold removal. There are exacting procedures that need to be followed or the mold could unintentionally be spread throughout your home or building. Professional assistance from a company like Water Mold Fire Restoration should be sought whenever crawlspace mold is encountered.

The mold must be removed before any affected materials are either treated and sealed or removed and replaced. You must properly contain the contaminated area to prevent cross contamination by any mold spores that happen to become dislodged during the removal process. Dehumidification must then be applied to return crawlspace moisture to acceptable levels that won’t support further mold re-growth. If the drying isn’t completed properly, chances are that the mold will return and all of the previous removal efforts will have been wasted.
