It’s time to have your flooring professionally cleaned. What kind of equipment works best? There are different types of floor cleaning equipment depending upon what type of floor you are having cleaned, hardwood, carpet, ceramic, stone, etc. Are you wanting residential floors cleaned, or commercial? Or maybe you need an oriental or other type of exotic rug cleaned. Let’s take a look at some of the many options available.

Carpet Cleaning Equipment

The most common carpet cleaning tool and the one used most by anyone cleaning carpet, homeowner and professional alike, is the carpet wand. Everyone is familiar with this tool. There are different styles and brands but the overall design is fairly basic. The cleaning agent comes in through a solution hose and is mixed with water when the trigger is pulled, usually out of 3-5 spray jets on the bottom of the wand. A vacuum hose attached at the top of the wand then vacuums the water, cleaning agent and dirt back up out of the carpet. A stair cleaning tool is also a sort of mini-wand and works the same way as a regular cleaning wand. Hot water, or steam cleaning is the method most recommended by carpet manufacturers.

Another tool, gaining in popularity, is an encapsulation machine. The carpet to be cleaned is first sprayed with a polymer that surrounds the dirt. This tool then uses a rotating or cylindrical brush assembly to work the polymer deep into the carpet, capture the dirt, and then move it to the top of the carpet fibers. The dirt is afterward vacuumed up. This is becoming a more and more popular method of cleaning carpet because it is a low-moisture process that allows the carpet to be walked on in a very short time. This type of tool is also used for dry carpet cleaning methods.

A bonnet machine is used in much the same way as an encapsulation machine. The difference being that instead of using a series of brushes, a bonnet machine uses soft cloth cleaning pads. A bonnet machine can be used for dry cleaning, encapsulation, or to shorten drying time after hot water cleaning.

Hard Surface Cleaning Equipment

The best way to clean hard surfaces is with heat, pressure, and suction. No more getting down on your hands and knees with a scrub brush and a bucket or pushing water around with a mop. A hard surface cleaning tool looks like a giant suction cup on a long handle. It applies high pressure hot solution under the “cup”, scrubs it into the surface with a rotary action, and then immediately vacuums the dirty water back up and out. The advantage to these tools is that dirty water is not pushed across grout lines or across the floor. There are also smaller versions of these tools that can be used on vertical surfaces, like around a bathtub or shower.

Hardwood Floor Cleaning Equipment

Hardwood floor cleaning is accomplished in much the same ways as ceramic or natural stone floors, with heat, pressure and suction. In fact many of the tools used to clean these other hard surfaces can be also used to clean hardwood floors. Because of the hardwood tool’s suction action, dirt and grime will not be pushed down into the cracks and seams in between your hardwood floor’s boards.
