More than forty Phoenix firefighters responded on Easter Sunday to a fire that broke
out at the Buckeye Rd. Amazon fulfillment center building. Workers were still in the
act of fleeing the building as fire crews arrived on the scene.
The fire, which started on the second floor, was quickly contained and extinguished
by the fire crews. Several large plastic bins had caught on fire; the cause of the fire is
unknown. The actual fire damage was contained to the second floor. It was not clear
what affect the fire and its cleanup would have on operations at the center, but it is
assumed that several employees’ work schedules will be negatively affected.
A fire can cause damage to more than then just the items that were directly involved
in being burned. If not dealt with quickly, the acidic nature of the fire’s smoke and
ash residue will continue to do damage to anything they come into contact with.
This is why if your home or business is ever damaged by fire, you need to take
immediate steps to help limit any secondary damage caused by the fire’s smoke and
ash.
It’s not just the fire itself that causes damage when firefighters respond to a fire. In
the case of the fire at the Amazon facility, the water used to put out the fire caused
even more damage to materials and items on the second floor not affected by the
actual fire. The water the firefighters used for the fire filtered downward through
the second floor to the first floor and damaged items and materials located there.
According to the International Association for Fire Safety Science, fire departments
can use upwards of 100 gallons of water to extinguish even a small house fire. Try to
imagine the damage that would be caused by the firemen using twenty 5-gallon
buckets of water to put out a small kitchen fire in your home.
As part of a fire’s cleanup, the removal of any water that is used to extinguish the
fire needs to be addressed and addressed very quickly. It can take less than 48 hours
for mold to develop in wet carpeting, furniture, walls, and personal items.
