Near the end of March, Franklinton, a Columbus suburb, received another heavy rain, reported to be 3.51 inches in 24 hours. The city storm sewers are not designed to handle that much rain at one time and water backed up into many lower levels of the neighborhood’s homes.
One manager of 96 rental properties reported that seven of them had flooded basements. Another manager said that she was “up to her knees in **it”.
A city spokesperson at the Department of Public Utilities said that the city was working on the problem. Columbus is planning on spending $15 million to improve the storm water system, first built in 1900, but that work won’t start until sometime in 2023. The city is also planning on paying residents to install sump pumps some time in 2024. If you are a Franklinton homeowner that means relief is nowhere in site for the near future.
The city said that it received 3,518 during the 24-hour period from residents complaining about flooded basements. Over that 2-day period, wastewater treatment plants treated a combined 600 million gallons of wastewater per day.
