At Water Mold Fire Restoration we are often asked about products that can be used to clean or kill mold. Many people hear about or read on the Internet that bleach is the ultimate mold killer. Many of these people also end up in the hospital from breathing in large amounts of chlorine fumes. In this article we will discuss some of the products that we recommend to remove mold.
Your ultimate goal when dealing with mold is not to kill it but to remove it. Look at it this way; if you have a skunk living under your porch, you have a problem. If you kill the skunk without removing it, you have just traded one problem for another. Mold needs to be removed, not necessarily killed.
Say No to Bleach
Unfortunately, chlorine bleach is not one of our favorites. First, bleach will not penetrate surfaces, but mold will. So bleach is only useful on hard, non-porous surfaces like countertops or ceramic tile. Second, bleach will affect colors if used on some porous materials. And lastly, chlorine fumes can be dangerous if inhaled in sufficient quantities.
Recommended Mold Removal Products
When mold becomes an issue in your home you should use an antimicrobial product to address it. Below are some of the products we feel are better options than chlorine bleach.
RMR-141 Fungicide – kills and cleans mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses and is EPA-registered. Spray it on, let the product dwell for at least 10 minutes, then remove any excess and allow the area to dry.
Concrobium Mold Control – spray it onto the mold and allow it to dry. Mold Control leaves a protective barrier that inhibits further mold growth and contains no VOCs.
Foster First Defense 40-80 – 40-80 is a sealant that is used after mold removal to coat and seal structural materials to prevent mold re-growth. It is also EPA-registered.
Lemocide – this is a commercial grade disinfectant for use on hard surfaces. It has a lemony scent so if that would bother you; you should seek a different option.
A Final Consideration
As we stated at the beginning, your ultimate goal should be mold removal and not just mold killing. Killing is good but removal is also necessary. There is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to household mold and mold removal. You should talk to a professional before attempting to tackle any mold problem on your own. A certified remediation company understands the science behind mold and a successful mold removal. A professional will know the safety procedures required and use the right products and equipment to eliminate your mold infestation problem without putting your family’s health and wellbeing at risk.
