vs.
What is the difference between “mold” and “mould”? It depends entirely on where you live. And we don’t mean the east coast, the west coast, or somewhere in between. It’s more a question of which side of which ocean do you live on.
In the American English language there is no “mould”. In the British language there is no “mold”. Australians also prefer the British version, but they exist upside down (you know, the “Land Down Under”) so I’m not sure that their opinion matters all that much. Then there are the Kiwi’s (New Zealanders). They side with the Australians.
When we Americans see or hear the word “mold”, we think of nasty fungi growing on walls that can make us sick. But there are other types of molds; Jell-O molds, cookie molds, industrial molds. The same goes for the British except they hear or see cookie mould, etc.
I think the only reason the Brits use a “u” in the word is because it reminds them of the United Kingdom. If you are British or you want people to think you are a Brit, use mould. If you’re a Yank or want people to think you’re a Yank, use mold!
And that’s the name of that tune!
