Mold has invaded an apartment in south Fort Meyers. Is it the tenants who are responsible or the landlord?
Tenant Allyson Jenson is fed up. She says there is mold growing everywhere inside her apartment. First she went to the Emergency room, then her daughter started getting sick. They moved out of the apartment and into a hotel.
When reporters went to the apartment to investigate, a local plumber warned them not to enter unless they wore protective masks. The Plumber with American Construction & Plumbing said that the air conditioner was causing the mold problem. It wasn’t removing enough moisture from the apartment.
Air conditioners, besides cooling the air, act as a giant dehumidifier. They are sized for each home or apartment to be able to hold humidity levels below 50%. In this case the A/C unit was unable to correctly process the air and moisture was collecting on the interior walls. The plumber tested the humidity level inside the apartment and found them to be 69%, which is well above the level needed to resist mold growth.
Channelside Apartments management blamed the mold problem on the tenants, saying they didn’t leave the A/C unit on and that caused the humidity problem. Management expects the tenants to clean up the apartment at their own expense because not running the A/C is a violation of their lease.
“I can guarantee you,” Jenson said, “they’re not getting another dime from us.”
