Even with the ongoing pandemic, personal emergencies and tragedies don’t stop happening. The American Red Cross, as always, remains focused on helping those in need. The Red Cross is not affiliated with any government agencies and receives no government funding.
The ongoing pandemic has forced the Red Cross to reconsider how they provide assistance to victims of fire in Western New York Region. The Red Cross volunteers, who make up 90% of the Red Cross workforce, are busy this week helping 32 people after five different fires. In just this year alone, the Red Cross has helped more than 42,000 people who have lost everything in home fires.
Instead of rushing out to help these families onsite, the Red Cross has been forced to rethink its response. Now the advice is being delivered and a lists of needs are being collected virtually, in an effort to protect the health of the families and the volunteers. Because of the pandemic, in cases where the volunteers do go out to the site of a disaster, they bring along hand sanitizer, disinfectant sprays, and masks and do their best to maintain social distancing.
If the fire department allows the people to remain in their home after a fire, the Red Cross may be able to help supply immediate needs by providing things such as food, water, or clothing. If the people are forced to evacuate their homes, the Red Cross can assist them in finding temporary housing.
