In August of 2002, Mitch and Cheryl Goldstein moved into their dream luxury home that they paid $446,000 to have custom built just for them. Only three years later, the same type of home was selling for $150,000 more than they had paid. They thought their dreams had come true.
Little did they know that when they moved in something else began to move in also. Water had been seeping into their home due to faulty construction and mold began to develop, almost from day one. It was impossible to see immediately, but it was there.
The Goldsteins are not without company in their housing woes. It has been determined that hundreds of other families in Southeastern Pennsylvania who bought new construction homes have similar stories to tell. In all, 27 different custom homebuilders’ practices are being investigated in respect to homeowner complaints about faulty construction practices.
Building inspectors, building experts, and code inspectors blame the problems on rushed production, undertrained workers, low-quality materials, and little to no oversight by the construction company management.
In a 2017 court case, Anthony Geonnotti, vice president of Toll Brothers, the Goldsteins builder, testified that he had inspected 300-350 homes over a two-year period and found that roughly 85% need repairs as a result of water intrusion. The statute of limitations has run out on many of these homeowners. These unfortunate owners will now have to pay out of pocket to have their homes repaired.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission have launched independent investigations into homeowner complaints. These investigations are still ongoing.
Water Mold Fire Restoration of Philadelphia, (215) 645-2960, says that with most water intrusion problems, the damage is not immediately visible. Until the problem reaches an extreme damage level, most homeowners are unaware that a problem exists. In most cases it is not until mold growth becomes visible, moldy odors become overwhelming, or someone begins to suffer health issues while in the home that a mold problem is even considered.
