Last weekend dangerous storms swept through Northern Georgia knocking out power and causing widespread flooding and water damage. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touchdown in Barlow County to our north and is looking into several other tornado reporting’s, one in southern Fulton County.
A company spokesman for Georgia Electrical Membership Corporation said that emergency crews would be working around the clock to get the power back on but working conditions were strained due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Crews are required to travel in separate trucks and must stay at least 6 feet apart while working.
In more than one case, people were awakened when they heard uprooted trees crash through their roofs, causing water damage in their homes. One resident said she and her husband were awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of high winds and the smell of rain and soil inside their townhouse. A tree had crashed through the ceiling in a guest bedroom.
Further north near Dalton, the Mill Creek reached a level of about 15 feet, 4 feet above flood stage. The city’s fire department responded to 8 emergency calls from motorists stranded on flooded roads. There was even one house that was lifted off its foundation and carried into the center of the street.
And the bad news weather-wise is that more spring storms are on the way.
Anytime your home as gone through a severe storm it’s important to inspect for damage.
