A water main break at Hawley Road just south of I-94 caused Maria Santoy’s basement to fill with approximately 5 feet of water. A pile of ruined, mud-covered belongings piled near the street can attest to the damage that was caused.
"We got to get all the stuff out of the basement so we can clean it and try and keep it from molding and mildewing too bad," said her brother-in-law, Chris Ericksen, who was among those who had come to help haul things to the curb.
With the furnace damaged, her home of 42 years has no heat, so Maria’s family has to pack up and find temporary shelter. They have yet to be able to determine if the home has suffered any structural damage.
In addition to her furnace, she also lost her water heater, a washer and dryer, a freezer and refrigerator, and a lawn mower. And of course all of her family’s personal items piled at the street.
Because the water traveled across the ground before entering her basement, the insurance company considers her loss to be a flood. Maria, like most of her neighbors, doesn’t have flood insurance. Her only hope is that the city accepts responsibility for the damage.
