Any mold can be dangerous to sensitive individuals and white mold is no different. So what is white mold and how can you get rid of it?

White is just a color, there are many molds that appear white, and among them are aspergillus, penicillum, and cladosporium. The strange thing is that these molds can also appear to be gray, green, and black in color. You should never attempt to classify a mold by its color. Even the infamous black mold, stachybotrys, can be colors other than black.

Mold Dangers

All molds can be dangerous if you happen to be sensitive to them and white colored mold is no exception. Molds can cause several adverse health effects including:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asthma
  • Throat and lung irritation

Almost all types of mold have some kind of negative health effects. If you find mold in your home it needs to be removed.

How White Mold Affects Your Home

The growth of white mold is quite common in residential homes. Many times the reason mold is white in color is because it‘s in its early stages of development. Many times the minerals in the water are what influence the mold’s white color. What kind of damage can white mold do to your home?

White mold can usually be found at the bottom and top of residential homes. Attics, basements, and crawlspaces are susceptible because these areas attract moisture. There are usually drastic temperature differences between inside and outside surfaces of these areas. The temperature differences can result in condensation issues. White mold loves the paper and cardboard that we store in these spaces. In addition there is plenty of exposed wood and maybe drywall.

White mold feeds on organic materials in your home; wood, fabrics, paper, drywall, etc. If the mold is left unchecked it can destroy structural components like wall studs, floor and ceiling joists, and roof sheathing. These why after being abandoned for years, old houses and barns begin to collapse. Of course this kind of damage doesn’t happen overnight. If you find white mold in your home today, your home is not going to fall down tomorrow.

If white mold is found in your HVAC system it can easily be dispersed throughout your home through your numerous air ducts. If your HVAC system is affected you should immediately shut down the system and seek professional help in having the mold removed.

Removing White Mold

The job of completely removing white mold can be difficult and time-consuming, depending upon the extent of the mold’s infestation. Contaminated materials should be removed. When addressing structural materials such as wall studs or floor joists, they should be cleaned with an antimicrobial solution, dried, and sealed, or encapsulated with specifically designed sealants to prevent re-growth.
