Why Is Washer Mold Still a Problem?

For more than two decades some models of front-loading washing machines have been plagued by mold-related problems. There have even been five class-action lawsuits filed covering more than 11 million models due to mold growth problems in the washers.

The issue with these front-loaders is that they don’t completely dry out after you use them if you close the door on the machine when you are done running it through a cleaning cycle. So, leaving the door open is the solution, right? Well, maybe not when it comes to having young children in the home. Leaving the door open on your washing machine could “invite” curious young minds to climb inside for a look-see. And that could lead to disaster!

Some manufacturers have taken action to reduce excess moisture buildup in their washers, GE in particular. GE has developed a new feature called Ultra Fresh Vent, which is supposed to help eliminate leftover moisture from washing clothes. Consumer Reports tested the washer to determine whether it really worked and said that the new vent did help somewhat.

1. Clean inside the door seal by pulling back the folds in the rubber seal. Also dry the seal when a washing cycle is completed.

2. Remove, if possible, the detergent basket and clean it on at least a monthly basis, if not more often.

3. Add white vinegar to the washer. Mold hates vinegar and the vinegar will also eliminate odors (if you hate the smell of vinegar, use lemon juice, the citric acid in lemon juice works as well as vinegar).

4. Add ½ cup of powdered dishwasher detergent and a run a cycle using the hottest water possible (in place of powdered dishwasher detergent you can use 3-4 cups of vinegar with ½ cup of baking soda).
