A fire started in a third floor apartment in Great Neck Plaza. The woman who lived there was trapped and couldn’t get out the apartment’s door. She had no time to wait for someone to help her. She jumped out of a third floor window.
Luckily for her, although fire fighters were not yet on the scene, police officers were. When she jumped, the officers were able to catch the woman in their arms. She was taken to North Shore hospital where she was reported to be in serious condition.
Two other people were taken to the hospital as well as three police officers that were treated for smoke inhalation. If trained first responders can be harmed at the scene of a fire, what do you think your chance of being injured will be like?
Once fire fighters arrived, they were able to get the fire contained within 30 minutes.
Living in apartments requires special fire safety awareness considerations. Never prop open exit or stairway doors that are meant to slow down the spread of fire. Remember the location of any common area fire extinguisher.
Develop an evacuation plan that includes more than one way out. Count and remember the number of doors between your apartment and the nearest fire exit. That way you can find the exit if it is dark or the power goes out.
Always exit by using a set of stairs, never get into an elevator. If you are trapped like this lady was, wait at a window and signal for help with a flashlight or a white cloth. And once you are out, never reenter to “save” something or someone.
