“I just started hearing what sounded like 30 bathtubs at once pouring behind my wall”, Annette Davis said.
The trouble started when a water-cooling tower on the roof of her condominium building ruptured, allowing water to flow down walls throughout the building. Although the condo management company took quick action, the restoration company they hired completely botched the dry-out.
Ms. Davis had been diagnosed with a condition called chronic fatigue syndrome that developed not long after the water problem. She was given medication for the condition and the meds seemed to be working for a while. Then her condition began to worsen. She lost a lot of weight, her teeth started cracking and her hair started falling out.
After undergoing more medical tests, doctors found toxins from Aspergillus mold in her body. She had her apartment tested for mold and found the mold behind the walls that had been originally damaged when the water-cooling tower malfunctioned. Her doctor noted on his medical report “…her symptoms began, I believe, that the Aspergillus exposure causing her toxicity probably occurred in her apartment.”
The restoration company that was hired by the condo association was not licensed or insured to perform mold remediation. Now they are both being sued by Ms. Davis.
"If you're immune compromised and you're exposed to mold, it can kill you," Davis said. "I'll be dealing with this for the rest of my life."
